Forest to frustrate European hopefuls

Nottingham Forest will attempt to pull further clear of Premier League relegation danger when they host top-four aspirants Newcastle United on Friday evening.

Forest head into this weekend’s round of fixtures in 14th position and two points above the drop zone – thanks solely to their form at home.

Steve Cooper’s men have picked up a joint-low of six points on their travels, but they have collected 20 at the City Ground and are unbeaten in nine games, including a win over Liverpool and draws with Manchester City and Chelsea.

Newcastle beat Wolves at St James’ Park last weekend, ending a five-game winless streak in all competitions, but they have not tasted victory on the road in the league since Boxing Day.

The Magpies, despite their recent setbacks, are fifth in the table and have two games in hand on fourth-placed Tottenham, who are four points ahead.

Forest can be proud of their exploits at home this season, but cannot afford to admire their work yet as they continue to scrap for their future in the top flight.

Cooper’s men still need to keep adding points to their tally consistently and the Welshman will be demanding another big performance when Newcastle visit.

They have lost just three of 13 games at home this season and the Magpies will have their work cut out trying to get a win

Newcastle have also been better on their own patch this season, picking up 26 of their 44 points at St James’ Park, and they have played out a joint-high six draws away from home.

Nottingham Forest vs Newcastle tip 1: Nottingham Forest or draw – double chance @ 23/20 with Betfred

Miggy primed to strike for Magpies

Miguel Almiron has been Newcastle’s star man this season and boss Eddie Howe is likely to bring him back into the starting XI after he scored the winner from the bench in last weekend’s clash with Wolves.

After a three-game drought, Howe opted to rest Almiron against the West Midlanders  but, with the game precariously placed at 1-1, the Paraguayan emerged from the substitutes to bag the decider.

The 29-year-old has 11 league goals to his name this campaign, more than he had managed in his four previous seasons combined, with six of those coming on the road.

He has already scored twice at Fulham and once at Bournemouth, who both came up from the Championship with Forest last summer.

Lodi set for long evening

Nottingham Forest are no strangers to a booking after receiving 54 yellow cards. Only four clubs – Fulham, Crystal Palace, Everton and Manchester United – have acquired more.

Left back Renan Lodi has been cautioned on four occasions, including in his previous two outings, and he looks a prime candidate to fall foul of the officials again.

He is expected to be lining up across from the tricky Almiron and will also have to try to contend with the attack-minded right back Kieran Trippier.

The second leg of this #PickYourPunt selection hangs on under 2.5 goals in the game.

Fewer than three have been scored in each of Newcastle’s previous four league fixtures on the road, while under 2.5 goals have landed in nine of Forest’s 13 games at home.
