Fritz withstood 12 aces from Denis Shapovalov in their third set but did not face a single break-point in a third round match that last an hour and 21 minutes.
The American won 6-4, 6-4 with a break of serve in each of the two sets being enough to take his opponent down. The first one came in the seventh game of the opening set while the decisive second break came in the third game of the second.
Where Fritz scored over Shapovalov was in winning the crucial points, especially on the second serve.
For instance, Fritz won 22 out of the 33 points on his serve in the first set while his opponent clinched 20 from 31 – an indication of there not being too much difference on serve. But when Fritz got an opening he converted it.
He will now hope to do the same against another challenging opponent in the fourth round.

Rune Has No Trouble against Schwartzman
That Diego Schwartzman even made the third round of this competition was bit of a surprise given how poorly he has played lately. Which is why Rune started a heavy 1/6 favourite to come through in his encounter against the Argentine and did so as easily as it was thought.
The Danish player completed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Schwartzman in a match lasting an hour and 32 minutes.
The first set proved to be a bit closer than what Rune would have expected but one break-point is all that he needed to win it. That came in the very first game of the opening set, and Rune broke Schwartzman to take the lead.
From there on neither player even got close to a break-point in the set which worked fine for Rune as he carved out the lead.
The second set saw the two break each other’s serves in the first two games but from that point onward it was Rune all the way. Two more breaks of serves followed in favour of the world number eight as he completed the easy win.
With back to back straight-set wins already, Rune will now hope to take the game to Fritz in round four as he aims to emulate his Paris Masters showing last season.
Fritz v Rune Prediction and Tip
Rune might not be a favourite but is giving indicators he is close to his best. We could see Rune win at least a set if not the match.
