Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen Set for Boxing Showdown

Must read

Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen are to reignite their MMA rivalry in the boxing ring, with the Spider’s retirement pending.

Two names synonymous with the UFC during the 2000’s boom. Both have a place in the UFC Hall of Fame for their battle at UFC 117 in 2010. The bout is widely regarded as one of the best come-from-behind victories in the sport.

Silva entered the as the reigning middleweight champion. Winning all eleven of his UFC bouts as well as finishing nine of them. Sonnen earned his shot at gold by defeating three top contenders with his elite wrestling and post-fight mind games.

The fight would shock many with how it played out. Sonnen dominated round by round, taking Silva down repeatedly staying in complete control. It wasn’t until round five that Silva showed his championship pedigree. In a clip replayed countless times. The then-champion secured a triangle armbar with less than two minutes on the clock forcing the tap.

The pair would later rematch at UFC 148. Silva would win this bout more decisively via second-round TKO. Putting the rivalry to bed… Until now.

Both men will now transition from the cage to the ring as they prepare to box each other. Anderson Silva will use this as his combat sports retirement. At 39 years old there isn’t anything left for the Brazilian to do.

The case will likely be the same for Sonnen, 47, who has been wildly successful away from the cage. Using his charisma to transition seamlessly into a broadcasting role. Alongside his popular YouTube channel.

The bout will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil on June 15th, and be set for 216 pounds. The match-up will be five two-minute rounds. It will be Sonnen’s boxing debut after an MMA career that saw him go 31-17-1. Silva will make his sixth walk, holding a 3-2 record at present.
